A young woman, Marianne, is preparing to leave her in-laws' compound where she has just been repudiated following a palaver in which she was not allowed to take part. She is held responsible for her husband's death, said to have occurred because she took it upon herself to take him, who was suffering from a strange illness, to hospital rather than to a traditional healer, as her in-laws wished. Marianne will not return to the faraway country from which she left forever without speaking out to tell her side of the story, to defend herself against the attacks that are spreading to relations between her country and her country-in-law, and to bid farewell to the late Sikali, who is more of a friend than a husband to her. This speech will return her to herself and to her native land, and she will leave, she who knows the arcana of her adopted culture, satisfied to have allowed the spirit of the palaver, which does not suffer the absence of any challenged voice from the chapter, to fall asleep peacefully.
